Snorkeling and Diving! With this hemisphere’s largest barrier reef less than half a mile offshore, exploring San Pedro’s underwater backyard is a no-brainer. Plan a half-day on the reef with an excellent guide and enjoy the many coral, fish and marine critters that populate this unique environment. Dolphins, sea turtles and even the gentle manatee are all possible sightings, if it’s your lucky day.
How to Get Around San Pedro
The most popular ways to get around the island are to rent a golf cart or to take a water taxi into to town. Golf carts allow you to easily explore on your own time and can be rented right from your resort. The public water taxi makes scheduled daily runs up and down the island’s coast and is a great option as well. Expect the main roads to be paved or cobblestones, with back streets and part of the main road north to be unpaved. The paved road ends at Mile 3.5 North, at Belizean Shores Resort. Throughout Belize, speed bumps are used to control the speed of traffic. Note that banks and ATM’s are only available south of the toll bridge in Boca del Rio, though many stores and restaurants take credit cards. There are a few small grocery shops north of the toll bridge, but selection and prices are better at the larger stores in town.
Having a game plan of the activities you’d like to prioritize takes the pressure off trying to decide what to do each day. Pick a few must-do’s and if they require a reservation, make sure to plan those ahead of time. This still allows you flexibility to go where the wind takes you, while also making sure that you don’t miss out on something that you’ve been looking forward to. San Pedro is waiting!
